Make Your Own Mask

We all know 2020 hasn't been the year that anyone was expecting, but here it is and the new norm is wearing a mask when we're out and about. In the UK it is becoming mandatory to wear a mask by July 24th. So if you want to learn how to make a mask, then I've adapted and made a simple tutorial below that you can follow. This is great for inexperienced sewers, trust me I know, lol. I hope you find this useful and let's hope that 2021 will a time where we never have to wear a mask ever again!

What you will need:

*Two 10" by 6" pieces of cotton fabric
*Tape measure
*Thread (Any colour is fine, you may want to match it to your chosen fabric)
*Pins
*Fabric or zig zag scissors
*Needle
*Sewing Machine (You can do it by hand, but it will take longer)
*Unpicker
*Embroidery scissors
*5 Safety Pins
*1/8" wide Elastic

Instructions:

Step 1:
Grab your fabric, tape measure and scale it to size. I recommend using zig zag scissors, as it prevents the fabic from fraying.

Step 2:

Next fold over the long edge of the fabric by a 1/4" and pin it all the way down. Make sure the pins face horizontally, so that it's easier for when it comes to sewing it on the machine. Do the same on the other long edge. Now sew it all the way down on your sewing machine, taking the pins out as you go. I think there's a strategy to sew over the pins but I'm not a hundred percent sure, lol. You can also do it by hand using a running stitch, but it will take longer.

Step 3:
After, fold over the shorter side by 1/2" and pin all the way down and sew to the end.

Step 4:
Next measure 8" of elastic, do this twice. Then get your safety pin and clip it to one end of one of your elastics and feed it through the shorter end of the fabric. Then grab both ends and tie them together. Now maneuver the knot around inside the fabric so that it becomes invisible. Do the same at the other shorter end.

Step 5:
Now ruche the shorter end of the fabric and grab two safety pins. Use one saftey pin and put it through the elastic and fabric to hold it in place. Do the same to the other end. Once you have done this, try on your mask to see if it fits well. If it is loose, take the safety pins out, un-tie the knot and cut the elastic shorter. Keep trying the mask on until it fits. Once it's comfortable take the safety pins out, grab a needle and sew the elastic in place.

There you go, you're all done. I hope that you have found this tutorial useful!
Keep safe and I will see you in my next blog post :).
